THE GREAT VICTORIA DESERT With Jan Forrest

THE GREAT VICTORIA DESERT Our speaker on 28th May will be Jan Forrest OAM, President of the Friends of the Great Victoria Desert Parks.  The Great Victoria Desert is the largest desert in South Australia.  It is located north of the Nullarbor Plain and continues north to the Musgrave and Everard Ranges in the APY Lands and extends west from the Stuart Highway near Coober Pedy to Laverton in Western Australia.   This desert is unlike perceptions of a desert as it is well vegetated, however, there is no permanent water only surface water after rain.  After rain, the desert comes alive with an amazing variety of colourful plants including everlastings, Eremophila species, Senna sp., Ptilotus or ‘pussy tails’, wattles such as the mulga, quandongs, succulents and the brilliant yellow Grevillea junctifolia, yellow Desert Grevillia and pink Hakea provide a kaleidoscope of colour during a good season.  The tall Desert or Mable Gums known by the aboriginal community as ‘Para’ are dominant on the landscape and provide hollows for the elusive Princes Parrot to nest.  Finally, the Ooldea mallee Eucalyptus youngiana has one of the largest fruits of all of South Australia’s eucalypts. Jan’s talk will outline projects being carried out by the friends including: Photographing existing Dept. of Environment vegetation sites with standard camera and from a drone. Locating stands of a newly discovered Eucalypt Eucalyptus wyolensis and using a mobile phone with an ap. called ‘cybertracker’ to monitoring the damage caused to quandong trees by feral camels.  She will also include images of the fauna and fauna of this little visited area of South Australia.
